Our Story

Founded in 1958, Gore is a global materials science company with more than 13,000 Associates spanning five continents and thousands of products across industries — from high-performance fabrics to implantable medical devices and products that reduce emissions, explore space and solve other complex challenges.

Our History

The story of our enterprise begins, quite simply, in a family home in Newark, Delaware. Our company founders, Bill and Vieve Gore, marked the new year — and their 23rd wedding anniversary — by establishing our first operations in their basement on January 1, 1958. It was a big risk: Both in their mid-forties with five children — two in college — they gave up Bill’s salary as a senior research chemist to pursue a dream. A versatile material had captured Bill’s imagination. He saw great untapped potential in polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE, a polymer discovered by Roy Plunkett at DuPont in 1938.

Community & Culture

Gore is a different kind of workplace. Our lattice structure guides how we operate and communicate.

Our founders, Bill and Vieve Gore, set out to build an innovative and inclusive enterprise that inspires the human spirit and makes a positive difference in the world. They fostered a community of small teams based on talent, mutual respect, trust and a sense of belonging.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

At Gore, every individual matters. We want each Associate to experience the inclusion promised in our fundamental beliefs and guiding principles, regardless of their age, abilities, disabilities, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other personal identifier that is important to every individual human being.

Diversity and inclusion are critical ingredients for sustaining an engaging working environment. Our enterprise is stronger when we include diverse backgrounds, talents and viewpoints; recognize each other’s unique contributions; and bring our knowledge together across the enterprise to make smart business decisions — truly making our whole more than the sum of our parts.

Our Associates are what differentiate Gore as an enterprise. Diverse perspectives, talents and experiences have fueled us for over 65 years, and they will propel us forward as a successful enterprise where all Associates are able to do their best work each and every day.
